The photo was likely done once their plans had been made for her to stay in Scotland with the kids and for him to head back to “make his fortune in the land of opportunity” and for her and kids to follow once he had established himself. He must have done so and sent money and letters “home” to Elizabeth eventually telling her to head south. The photograph would not have been cheap and I doubt a Scottish lass would spend the money to keep the photo for herself… I can see it being done knowing they were to be apart for quite sometime. I think you are right to guess her age at about 25. John Simmonds |

There seems to be two thoughts on when the Mckenzies came to Melbourne, one has them coming from Leith in Scotland after 1851 and immigrating with several children. The 1851 census might be the source of that direction.
The other is the Alexandra and Elizabeth married in Rio after being rescued from The India and travelled on the Grindlay landing in 1841 where all the children were born. |
Looking at the documents I think there is a chance that they are both correct as both Mary and William were born in sub Port Philip Brit ( Port Philip British Colony)
Whichs means Alexander and Elizabeth arrived in 1841 travelled back to Scotland with two children around 1845, Alexander came back to Melbourne in 1852, leaving Elizabeth and six children in Leith who then immigrated to Melbourne in 1857. |
Hope Street is now called Hopefield Terrace, to get a sense of what it was like in the mid 1880`s look around the other streets.
